Dan Deacon

Hey y’all. It’s been a while since my last mixtape but I promise this one is wicked awesome to make up for the past few months. I’ve been busy with final exams and…graduating. So, if you’ve graduated, this is in dedication to you! And if not, it’s in dedication to you anyways! To summer and adventures! Let’s celebrate! In the words of ‘Ye: “Yes, barely pass any and every class, looking at every ass, cheated on every test. I guess this is my dissertation. Homie this shit is basic, so welcome to graduation! Get on down!”

Pet Shop Boys

01 | Pet Shop Boys – Did You See Me Coming?

Despite the fact that Yes is Pet Shop Boys 10th studio album, they show no signs of slowing down powering out hits like this one. The entire album is great to listen to and ranks right up with their previous release Fundamental that gave synth pop a new face of minimalism. This track destroys the dance floors and will be Pet Shop Boys’ next single from Yes!

02 | Röyksopp – The Girl and the Robot

Aaaah how we all love Puffball Mushroom (way to represent in costume Torbjørn)! Junior is an album that slightly moves away from the more downtempo ambient tendencies of Melody A.M. and the Understanding with songs like ‘Happy Up Here’, ‘Tricky Tricky’, ‘Vision One’, and this one, ‘The Girl and the Robot’. Watch the video for the latter below. It totally kicks ass and gets me excited for a potential Röyksopp tour…if the stage set up is anything like the one in the video, I will be so stoked! I love Robyn too, she knows how to shake it.

Yes! Midterms over for now and Reading Week is upon us (at least for me in Edmonton). Most people I know are going to Mexico or Vancouver or somewhere that isn’t -20 degrees. Lucky them. I’ve been listening to some wikkid stuff and haven’t had time until now to share. So, I decided to make a mixtape. Woohoo!

Before I start with the tracklist, I was listening to the Lonely Island’s Incredibad release which Kevin recently posted about. It’s not a bad comedy release. Some of the stuff on there is pretty funny. One song I keep revisiting is “I’m on a Boat” featuring T-Pain. I can’t help it. I don’t want to listen to T-Pain more than I already do but this song is REALLY GOOD. If this was an “actual” rap song with T-Pain, and maybe featured like Yeezy, T.I., and Lil’ Wayne it would totally be a hit. I’m convinced. Just picture a “Swagga Like Us” remix version of “I’m on the Boat”. 52nd Annual Grammys performance?! I’m calling it.

Another song I keep looping on Incredibad is this INSANE rap that Natalie Portman does. I am severely scuuuurrrred of Natalie now. As Andy Samberg puts it, “my dick is scared of you”. My dick is scared of Natalie Portman. My favorite part is the response to when Parnell asks, “Natalie, one final question, if you could steal a smooch from any guy in Hollywood…” I lose it every time. Hilarious.

Don’t be fooled by Natalie’s good looks and cute smile! She is a bad ass bitch. Anyways, enjoy your long weekend! Hopefully this mixtape will jump start things.

Pet Shop Boys

It’s been a while since we heard from them, but everyone’s favourite electronic pop duo, Pet Shop Boys, are back. Despite my last sentence, the British group has been consistently releasing music since their heyday back in the late 80s, and to a smaller degree early 90s. Yes, their tenth album of original music is out March 23rd. Yes! Get ready to wade into the delectable synth pop pool with their newest single “Love Etc.”

Telefon Tel Aviv

My jaw dropped when I read this in my mail. So sad…and just days after their album dropped. He passed away on Jan 22 at the young age of 31. The cause of death wasn’t revealed. So so sad. I think the eulogy from Charlie’s band mate, Joshua Eustis, reflects Charlie’s magnanimous character which is unquestionably felt throughout the wonderful music that they’ve made together:

Aside from Charlie’s singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world – his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a niece, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

This ’09 year has gotten off to a great start. GLOBAMAMANIA! Some lesser in magnitude events but still worth mentioning: a FANTASTIC season premiere of 24. The previous seasons have been a bit lacking but the 2 hours x 2 days introduction of 24 back into my life was magnificent. I lalalalalala loooove Jack Bauer! ANNND Slumdog Millionaire won FOUR TIMES at the Golden Globes: best drama, best director (Danny Boyle), best screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and best original score (A.R. Rahman). It is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time so check it out if you haven’t. Also, the soundtrack for this movie is SOLID. “Latika’s Theme” song broke my heart when it was played in the end…broooke my heaaaart.

Musically, ’09 has had many fanastic music releases already and some I’m suuuuuper looking forward to in a few months. WOOHOO!
