Flawlessly able to cross back and forth between reverb-ridden classic rock and low fidelity sludge,  Kurt Vile’s presence alone would be enough to make this a classic show, but completing the best one-two punch tour of recent memory are New Jersey natives and fellow lo-fi stalwarts Real Estate. If you’re the type that was slightly disappointed by Dum Dum Girls, eagerly await Best Coast,  and don’t think there’s anything ridiculous about Chillwave besides the title, then this is definitely the show for you. There have been some truly phenomenal releases in the past couple of years on labels like Woodsist, In the Red, Captured Tracks, and eventually Matador for some, but at the forefront of all these new acts you’ll find Vile and Real Estate, who have managed to release accomplished albums without losing any of their DIY sensibilities.

To win a pair of tickets to see Kurt Vile and Real Estate at the Great Hall next Tuesday, July 20, send an email to contests@cavacool.com with “The Great Kurt Vile” in the subject line and your full name in the body. This contest closes Sunday, July 18 at midnight. To find other great shows, check out Collective Concerts.

Sure, the “supergroup” moniker is thrown around a bit too often, but it’s kind of unavoidable when talking about The New Pornographers, who have established themselves as an institution of Canadian indie rock. You can keep yourself pretty busy just listening to the Pornographers’ side/main projects, from the A.C. Newman solo albums, Neko Case, Immaculate Machine, Destroyer, Swan Lake, etc., but for me nothing beats a good listen to Mass Romantic, their debut album released in 2000. And who can ignore Twin Cinema, which we ranked as our eighth greatest album of the last decade. There is no shortage of great music released by the collective and what’s more they’ve just released a new album, Together, and are ready to tour Canada once again.

To win two tickets to see The New Pornographers perform with The Dodos and The Dutchess and the Duke at the Sound Academy on June 15, bashfully send an email to contests@cavacool.com with “I love porn, but only the new stuff” or something like that in the subject line and your full name somewhere in the body. Your secret will be safe with me. This contest closes Sunday, June 13 at midnight. For more info or to see the ridiculous amount of great shows coming up in Toronto this summer, visit Collective Concerts.

After touring as Jason Collett’s backing band for several years, the four members of Dark Horse have re-emerged as Zeus, ready to step out of the shadows with their debut album Say Us, released in February. As much as Collett has been compared to Bob Dylan in terms of the vocal similarity and songwriting, Zeus may appeal to fans of his support, The Hawks, who later found fame in their own right as The Band. The three chord stompers are there, as is the rootsy-feeling.

Whether you’re a fan of the band or just looking to discover one of Toronto’s finest indie rock upstarts, you can’t miss their show this Thursday, May 27 at the Mod Club. Support includes Matt Murphy and Danielle Duval. Courtesy of Collective Concerts, we’ve got two tickets to give away. To win them, send an email to contests@cavacool.com with “Sound Like Zeus” in the subject line and your full name somewhere in the body. This contest closes Wednesday, May 26 at 10pm.

Zeus – Marching Through Your Head
Zeus – Kindergarten

If you miss this show, be sure to catch them at the Toronto Island Festival where they’ll be playing as part of the Toronto Revue. Not to mention that Beach House, Broken Social Scene and Pavement will also be there, so if you haven’t bought your ticket yet, your mother was right and you are completely irresponsible.

When we first picked up on Girls early last summer, they were just a small buzz band with a killer song which no one could ignore. Then it turned out that ‘Lust for Life’ wasn’t an outlier, instead it was just the opener on a great string of songs from one of the best debut albums of last year, Album, our eighth favourite album of that year.

They seem to be touring non-stop and their next visit to Toronto will bring Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White to the Phoenix this Friday, April 9 with Dum Dum Girls. To win two tickets to this show, send an email to contests@cavacool.com with “I wish I had a boyfriend” in the subject line and your full name in the body of the email. This contest closes April 8 at midnight.

Bruce Peninsula may not have made the shortlist for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize as we would have liked, but that doesn’t change the fact that their debut album A Mountain Is a Mouth is one of the more memorable Canadian folk albums of recent years. Deservedly so, they’re some of the first stars to come from the loosely-affiliated collective growing around Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park, who may give that other Toronto social scene a run for their money in the coming years.

After the band concludes their American tour with an appearance at South by Southwest later this week, Bruce Peninsula will be returning to Canada to play a few shows and festivals. Courtesy of Collective Concerts, we’ve got two tickets to give away to their first show back in Toronto on March 25 at The Garrison. To enter to win, send an email to contests@cavacool.com with “Bruce Peninsula” somewhere in the subject line and your full name in the body of the email. This contest closes March 23 at midnight.
