LOLA Festival 2008

For the past couple of years, a free music and arts festival has been put on in downtown London in September, this year from the 18th to the 21st. Last year saw Final Fantasy, Grizzly Bear and The Constantines on the bill, this year has a bunch of relative unknowns. Holy Fuck returns from last year, and I know of Do Make Say Think, Plants and Animals, Bocce and the Hylozoists, but the rest is new to me. I would’ve preferred more star power to the line-up, but since it’s free, I’m not sure how much I can complain. Any recommendations from the rest of the bands playing?

This sounds like a really cool show for zero bucks. I don’t know many of them, but I’m sure there’ll be a handful of keepers when you see them.

I never really liked Do Make Say Think. They always seemed like second rate rate Most Serene Republic, which is already a second rate Broken Social Scene, which is second to nothing.

Speaking of cool festivals though. Anybody going to the Wolfe Island Music fest on August 8-9?

Handsome Furs
Wintersleep
Cadence Weapon
Land of Talk
Jason Collett
Plants and Animals
Tony Scherr
The Acorn
The D’ubervilles
Music Maul
P.S. I love you

Do Make Say Think as the ‘headliner’ is actually what prompted most of my disappointment. I saw them a few years ago on Toronto Island but promptly tuned out.

Wolfe Island looks really good though. Wintersleep and Handsome Furs alone are enough to make it worth attending.

I’ve heard great things about Torngat live, apparently they chase each other around with horns and such other musical antics. Maybe Sandro Perri too… haven’t heard of his performances live but Tiny Mirrors is a decent album.

We Are Wolves put out a spunky little EP a few years ago, and from what I can remember they were a little similar to the subtly-differing We Are Scientists. Maybe check them out too? I’m jealous of this free concert!
